EFI is an international organisation established by European States. By early October 2006, twelve European States (Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Norway, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Turkey) had ratified the Convention on EFI. With its 129 member organisations and seven Project Centres, it offers the best forest research contacts and acknowledged collaboration at the European level.
